Paedophile Matthew Horan – who groomed 9 and 11-year-old girls through social networking sites – is a loner, who never worked in the near decade since he did his Leaving Certificate.
His family home was attacked shortly after midnight on Monday and, according to a family friend, Horan’s father and brother do not want to be associated with him.
The 26-year-old, from west Dublin, was sentenced to a nine-and-a-halfyear prison sentence, for exploiting children and possessing depraved child pornography.
His sentence has the last two years suspended, and with standard remission of 25 per cent, Horan will be out of prison in just over five years and seven months. He has begun his term in a special wing, G3, reserved for sex fiends at the Midlands prison, where he was transferred two months ago while on remand ahead of his trial.
It is a designated area for sex offenders where they are protected from the general prison population.
Other high-profile inmates on the landhim ing include Eric Eoin Marques – the Ing include Eric Eoin Marques – the Irish man accused by the FBI of being the world’s largest child pornographer.
Marques, 32, from Mountjoy Square in Dublin, has been involved in a four-year legal battle to prevent his extradition to America where he faces a prison sentence of between 24 to 100 years for facilitating child pornography by providing hosting services on the dark web.
A source revealed: ‘Horan is a high-profile prisoner so you would expect him to serve his time in Arbour Hill.
‘But there’s a waiting list for Arbour Hill.
‘He’s been on the G3 landing since November and that’s a protection landing for sex offenders.
He’ll be there for the foreseeable future.’ It is a future nobody expected for the young man, but people who know his family have always remarked on how he was very antisocial.
During last week’s court hearings, Horan was portrayed as a loner with autism.
The court was told that his mother Santina died when he was just three years old and, as result of losing his young wife, Matthew’s stock controller father Paul was left adrift.
A family friend recalled yesterday: ‘I’ve known him since he was a young kid and he was very, very quiet.
‘Even as a kid he was antisocial. You’d never see a group of people hanging around with him, he didn’t play sports and I don’t ever remember having birthday parties. He never worked. He did his Leaving Cert and that was it… that was when he got into the internet and the slippery slope.’ Nobody was at home at the freshly painted ivy-clad two-storey house in St John’s Crescent, Clondalkin.
Indeed the only clue that all is not as it should be at this neat home is the still-fractured glass on the front door from last Monday night’s vigilante-style attack.
It happened after midnight on Monday, and nobody has been seen at the house since.
The pal explained: ‘This is just horrible, horrible and everyone is in total shock.
‘When I heard about this first last year I couldn’t believe it. His father and brother are really shocked as well. His dad’s nerves are gone over the whole thing. His father and brother are in total shock. They didn’t go to the court because they want to remain anonymous. I think someone attacking their home is bang out of order.’ Last week Dublin Circuit Court was told that a forensic examination of Matthew Horan’s computer uncovered recorded Skype calls between him and two nine-yearold girls, both individually and together. One of the girls had bought her mobile phone with her Holy Communion money so she could look at cartoons, dancing and singing. But recordings, seized by gardai during two raids on Horan’s home in Clondalkin, showed footage of this girl and a second girl, engaging in graphic sex acts. The court was also told Horan had sexually explicit text conversations with these girls and during these chats nude photos were exchanged. Meanwhile, an 11-year-old girl told how she repeatedly told Horan she would kill herself as he threatened to post nude photos of her on the internet if she did not provide him with even more graphic photos of herself.
Gardai, led by Detective Superintendent Declan Daly, also discovered thousands of images and videos of child porn and some of those featured in these photos and videos were babies.
Meanwhile, detectives are likely to bring further charges against Horan. And they’re also investigating a second man who fantasised with Horan about abusing his own young daughter.
These revelations about Horan’s depravity have devastated and sickened his family who continue to live in Clondalkin.
